The flight from Minneapolis to Keflavik (a city 20 minutes outside Iceland’s capital, Reykjavik) was a little over six hours (we landed 7:00 a.m. local time; 2:00 a.m. Central time) We were hoping the boys would sleep for at least three of those, but nothing ever goes as planned… Little did we know that each seat on the plane had its own entertainment system complete with television shows, movies, and music all on-demand. With all this at their fingertips, who would WANT to sleep?! We watched the sun set over the clouds in Minnesota and saw it rise again when we were over Greenland. The plane ride, itself, was a unique experience for most of the boys (foreign airline) and when the pilot started speaking in Icelandic the boys grew worried, but all was good—they spoke pretty decent English too!
When we arrived in Iceland, we saw the “Iron Maiden” tour plane at the airport…it was kind of a neat sight to see. After going through Passport security and customs, we took a “Reykjavik Excursions” coach bus into the city to get to the church, Hallgrimskirkja for the concerts. We arrived at the bus station and walked the rest of the way to the church (about a 5-8 minute walk). The Church was gorgeous! In fact, one of our hostesses said that it was recently dubbed one of the top ten “Most Beautiful Churches in the World.” It has the tallest steeple in all of Iceland and is the tallest building in the city of Reykjavik. We had a quick spot of breakfast and a twenty minute “power nap” before the service and concert. Following the concert the boys ate yet again!
From the Hallgrimskirkja, we went to the Grafarbogskirkja (where we are spending the night) to get settled in. We took a city bus to get to the second church which was a fun experienc
e for the boys. They were mesmerized by the traffic lights of all things. They thought it was neat that they went from red, to yellow, to green (as opposed to just from red to green, as in the US). At the church we took a three hour nap and then ate supper with the Icelandic Girls Choir. They had about six different kinds of lasagna—it was crazy!! I’ve never seen so many types in my life. After dinner the boys played games with the girls and then they sang some Icelandic songs together. It was kind of a neat experience!
The boys are currently getting showered and ready for bed. It’s been a long time since they actually have had a good night sleep and they’re really looking forward to bed! Well gotta jet! Keep checking for updates!
